A recent Asean meeting in Laos discussed the direction of the intellectual property (IP) plan for the next 10 years (2026-2035). The meeting, hosted by Laos’ Ministry of Industry and Commerce, the Asean Secretariat, and the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO), brought together member states, IP experts, and stakeholders to examine the current state, challenges, and opportunities of IP in the region. They also identified strategic priorities and directions for IP development in Asean from 2026-2035. Topics covered included policy and legislation, administration and enforcement, awareness and education, innovation, trade, culture, public health, environment, and the digital economy. The meeting also considered the role of IP in achieving the Asean community vision 2025 and the Sustainable Development Goals. Laos emphasized the importance of reviewing the Asean IPR Framework Agreement and proposed it as a Priority Economic Deliverable for 2024. However, both national and regional efforts are required to strengthen the IP framework and promote innovation in Asean using IP as a strategic enabler. It is worth noting that Asean is projected to become the fourth largest economy in the world by 2030.
